New Year, New Goals: The Animation Trends to Watch in 2025

Welcome to a new year! One of my resolutions is to become consistent with this newsletter again. I missed it. I put off writing to you many many times but that won't happy again. I've loosely planned out monthly newsletters for the entire year! I was a bit shocked that I was able to do that but I'm happy that I did.

I know that the industry continued to go through A LOT of changes last year. We saw a lot of archives removed from various streaming platforms, the continued erasure of Cartoon Network, and the end of a few shows that were dear to our hearts. However, even with all of that, there were a lot of promising shows, movies, trailers, and announcements of upcoming projects.

EMERGING TRENDS:

  • "Underdog" projects

This weekend, Flow won a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film. In a year when we got Dreamworks' Wild Robot, The Garfield Movie, Pixar's Inside Out 2, and Kung Fu Panda, it was a movie without humans and no dialogue beat them all. I am anticipating that while "the studios" will continue to release films with characters we are all too familiar with, we may see another film like Flow emerge and shake things up.

  • Video Game inspired shows / movies

I know there are already a few such as The Last of Us, Halo, Mario. However, the success of Arcane Season 1 AND Season 2 gives me a reason to believe that we will be seeing more similar styled and toned animated shows... eventually

  • Teen Shows

Again with Arcane, X-Men '97, Invincible Fight Girl, and Jentry Chau vs the Underworld. I believe we are at the beginning of a resurgence of teen animation. Of shows that are not too childish and not quite adult at the same time, it excites me deeply.
